We’re on a roll!

Well the kids and I were really “on a roll” on Friday, and I have some cute pics to show for it…

I started off the day with my usual goal for this summer’s SAHM work: Survive the day with the kids. That’s it. But when they’re being good (and letting mommy sleep in until 8:30am even!), I tend to forget this bare minimum standard and raise the bar a little.

So “baking” was placed on our To-Do list for the day… we’d recently acquired some freshly-picked strawberries and I wanted to make a little treat with some of the last ones to put in the little plastic basket when we returned it to its owners.

Our inspiration for a recipe, oddly enough, came from Harmony’s DS game! ;) But since “Cooking Mama 2″ doesn’t supply an accurate ingredient list (let alone specific quantities), it was a search on the ‘net that led us to a real recipe for Strawberry Roll Cake.

We started with this one, but made our own substitutions. For example, we didn’t have any caster/castor sugar (and didn’t even know what it was until we searched for it and got some answers), so we hoped regular fine sugar would be fine (ha! no pun intended!). Oh, and we used vanilla instead of strawberry essence.

Luckily, it turned out ok, and so did our use of a cake pan instead of a roll pan…

Before baking…

At this point, we had a lunch break and continued our rolly theme by having peanut-butter-and-banana roll-ups. I definitely recommend this easy lunch to other busy moms as the kids can mostly assemble the sandwiches themselves.

Tortilla + peanut butter + sliced bananas = a fun roll-up

After lunch, we finished putting together our Strawberry Roll Cake and it was yummy!! We used whipped topping from a tub instead of whipping cream by hand since we figured it didn’t matter much went *inside* the cake (it wouldn’t be baked or anything so as long as it tasted good, it was a keeper).

Fill your strawberry cake with berries and whipped cream, or chocolate or anything yummy!

by then, any effort at sibling civility had been abandoned and they were back to bugging each other again…

Thankfully, I survived the rest of the day until Paul got home and then went to get us some shawarmas for our family movie night (so also very rolly!).

BTW, watching Harry Potter 4 in the post-Twilight era is a whole different experience! ;)
