scallop edge lace punch from Stampin’ Up

April 27th, 2010 -- Posted in scrappy / stampy | Comments Off

Oh wow have I ever enjoyed creating such lovely lacey designs with the new scallop edge punch from SU! It took some practice, but it was well worth getting the hang of and I suspect you’ll see a lot of this pattern in my next few batches of cards! ;)

Papers:Pirouette Pink cardstock, Close to Cocoa cardstock, Certainly Celery cardstock and white velum.
Other Materials: Chocolate Chip ink, silver brads, felt flowers in Chocolate Chip and Pirouette Pink, punched flower shapes (Stampin’ Up Floral Fusion die cut), and of course the paper punched with scallop trim punch.
Stamp set: still playing with the same Kind Thanks set I did some cards with in a previously post.

My friend was telling me that there were measurements out there of sizes that would work well with the punch. I was able to find this helpful blog post that had many of the measurements, but I did find I had to modify them a bit… maybe just because I was learning and getting the hang of things. I think I’d actually prefer (for now), making them as I go and just cutting it at the right spot. You could always just punch an entire edge of paper, whatever size, and cut it at the right place to be turned into a couple rectangles.

I haven’t yet decided whether or not to put these cards up for sale in my KStar Store, but even if these particular ones aren’t there, it would be a good idea to peak at the ones that are there before the summer in case you do see one you’d like to order! After July 1st, our government is changing the tax system to that of one with Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), as opposed to the current system we enjoy with separate Provincial and country-wide taxes (PST & GST). This won’t change the price of the cards sold to anyone here in Ontario, but it will mean an added tax to everyone else in Canada.

If you don’t see a card that meets your needs in the store, you can always email me to request a custom card and I’d be happy to create something just for you…

summertime is sooner than you think!

Yes I realize that it’s only “officially” been spring for a few weeks now, but this means that summer is just around the corner! If you’re a busy mom like me, you know about all the different little things that need to be organized and planned for!

Here are some of the things on our “to plan” list; maybe they’re on yours too:

  • end-of-the-year graduation (and trip) for our grade-six-er
  • gardening purchases and work
  • booking summer vacation!!!
  • planning childcare and camps (day-camps or away-camps)
  • gifts for teachers and childcare providers
  • summer-related home improvements (bring on the A/C!!!)

Last year I made a Summer Planning Calendar to make all the organizing easier… this year I’ve done the same (with new dates) and am again offering it up as a Freebie! You can visit this page to open and print (or save and print) your own copy of the .pdf file.

Our summer plans are starting to come together… My oldest will actually be giving away-camp a try for the first time! She probably expects that she won’t miss us at all during her two weeks there, but I suspect she might just a little. We were hoping that we might finally be able to take a real family vacation (it’s now been almost 2 years!) but we’ll see if that’s possible.

We are really happy that we have a space for our youngest for daycare this summer! There is a spot freeing up at his current childcare centre for just the summer (the parents need a “place-holder” for their full-time spot, so to speak). He absolutely adores it there so I’m sure he’ll have a fun time being there every day for most of the 2 months off.

What about you – are you ready for summer?

Stay tuned and you may get some ideas for things like end-of-the-year teacher cards/gifts or activities to do with kids home from school! ;)

KITK: Trying an apple “pat-a-pie”

April 17th, 2010 -- Posted in KidsInTheKitchen, family | Comments Off

The recipes I’d had planned to do with the kids in mid-March did not pan out… I still managed to try them out, but did not have any small helpers to do that. At least they got to enjoy the eating part of the Peanut-Butter Thumbprint cookies (a recipe by Anna Olson) and the Chocolate-Orange Molten Lava cakes (in an issue of last year’s Chatelaine magazine).

Our next “Kids in the Kitchen” baking adventure finally happened in early April as my DS helped me put together an apple “pat-a-pie”. This recipe by Today’s Parent involves no rolling out of dough; just some shaping and flattening by hands (whether big or small).

We made the recipe (click here for the original version) with the optional raisins but next time I would say to make it without.

It goes really well with vanilla ice cream, of course, especially if it’s still warm. :) The next recipe I have planned for our baking activity is some simple cookies and then we’ll see what else we come across!
