scrapbook layouts: Sept ‘08 & Oct ‘08

My “Family 2008″ has been the album I’ve been working towards completing lately. So that book was the one I had in mind while at a crop at the LSS in my “old” neighbourhood. It was awesome to be able to get out of the house for a few hours – with a huge credit given to my DH and my friend Adrian for helping me be as comfortable as possible for the all that travelling and sitting!

I managed to stay for a couple stretches of 1-2hours. Not great (especially when you have to pay for the whole day whether you can stay or not), but not bad considering I haven’t been to a crop there since the accident. My pain was tolerable for the first couple hours but then took a turn towards unbearable after lunch and I just needed to get home to my couch. I’d brought along a couple ice packs, but that only lasts so long…

Anyways, I’m very proud to say that I did manage to get a couple of layouts done at least! September 2008 and October 2008 were both done at the crop, and many of the papers in the layouts were bought right in the store. That’s one of my favourite parts of an in-store crop: being able to bring your photos right to the paper and pick out perfectly coordinating supplies. :)

Oct. 2008

Visit this page of my Scrappy Stampy Gallery to see the pages in more detail. Most of the papers and supplies used to create the pages were either purchased at the Scrapbox, or were from my stash of items (Stampin’ Up, Creative Memories).

Added to each of the layouts were a few “found objects” from the home! My hubby had these small black, orange, and clear rock chips out to do a craft with our son: a nightlight for the kids’ bathroom upstairs. There were some leftover and they were the perfect shades to adorn a tag with on my Halloween 2008 layout. Then there was a blue star lying around made of clear plastic (might’ve been from an earring or something!). That got tucked right into some white space in the September layout.

Just goes to show you that you can really think outside the box when it comes to supplies for embellishing your albums! Might not be the best thing if you’re very concerned about everything being photo-safe, but now that I’ve mostly switched from film photos to digital photos, I’ve been able to be less selective about what goes under the page protectors along with my pictures.

Hope you like seeing the layouts, and happy scrapping! :)

happy holidays & happy new year!

I hope everyone has been enjoying the holidays with their families! We have had a very quiet & subdued Christmas this year, but there were still lots of great moments and memories.

One of my favourite things is when the kids do something all on their own that is special and thoughtful. I love the tags my son made this year – his handwriting is still in the early stages and he needs lots of room so he started each name on the front of the tags and continued on with each name around the back! Just adorable. As for my daughter, I gave her some money of her own to buy me some presents when we were out shopping together and she picked out some nice things for me, including a makeup brush set and a little face mask package.

I love thoughtful gifts from anyone – not just the kids! so I was thrilled with the beautiful framed set of photos our friend Kat put together for us and the cute candle set from Karen. My hubby did a great job of treating me to lots of nice things despite our tight budget and spent all of his Coke points on a magazine subscription for me that I’ll get to enjoy all year. :) I could only get DH one real gift this year, so I stretched it out and made it fun by having him go through a treasure hunt to find it (under his favourite chair where it had been for 2 weeks without him even knowing it! lol)

A portion of my Christmas gift money went towards putting together a new holiday album – I have already used up 3 full 12×12 scrapbooks just for Christmas photos from 1999 to 2008!!! So album #4 is in the works and I’ve already finished the title page. Right now I’m enjoying the task of sorting through all the photos to pick the ones that turned out the best to include in the new album’s pages.

Christmas Scrapbooks

Other 12×12 albums I still have some work to do in are: the Family 07/08 album, Harmony’s birthday album, Avery’s birthday album, and both kids’ school albums. I definitely feel like I’m less into scrapbooking these days than I used to be, and also our photo-taking style and opportunities have changed. The kids are older now, and less keen on posing for the camera so there really aren’t as many reasons to catch moments on film. And although they still seem to be growing and changing so fast, it is much less quick compared to when they were babies and toddlers, when their appearance and skill set could change in a matter of days or weeks! All of this has me wondering about maybe putting together a photo book for all the 2009 photos (and future years) instead of continuing to have family scrapbooks for each year. What do you think?

Observations on pain

October 11th, 2009 -- Posted in friends, pain / disability, painkillers, people suck | Comments Off

The first set of observations are mostly related to my most recent visit to my family physician, a brisk and dismissive woman who seems to want to write you a prescription and send you on your way instead of helping you. Last fall she was the one who told me I was “carrying too much” and to just keep on going to work every day. I have yet to be able to walk again the way I could before doing that. And yet I’m forced to depend on her for help, still staggering out to the same doctor, hoping she might be able to accomplish something useful for once and not accidentally kill me in the process.

Observations:

* Just because doctors haven’t yet seen a direct physical cause for pain doesn’t mean the pain doesn’t exist and doesn’t mean there isn’t a cause that hasn’t been discovered. With so many ligaments and tendons and muscles and nerves, it’s ridiculous that some physicians chalk nerve pain up as “nothing” real quick. If someone is having sciatic pain sharp and shooting down their butt and leg, there is something physical at work there! It may not be a bulging or herniated disc, but it may be a muscle or anything else. Until the technology exists to see everything at work, I don’t think doctors should be able to say “Well it’s nothing”. If it’s just not something you have personally detected, that doesn’t meant it’s nothing.
